Spray foam insulation is officially known as spray polyurethane foam (SPF) and is a type of insulation material that starts out as a foam–like liquid and hardens later. There are actually two types of spray foam insulation. Closed–cell insulation is airtight, robust and suitable for both reinforcement and insulation. Open cell insulation is more open and uses air to support the insulation process.
As a result, the foam is more elastic than the closed–cell foam and less dense. The open cell is useful for wood to breathe and also serves as sound insulation. Because closed–cell cells are denser, they are generally considered to be a better insulator of the two, but as mentioned above, both have their uses.
